Desi Women and the Diaspora

Rasaka Theatre Company presents a revealing look at the immigration experience through the eyes of South Asian women.  Rasaka's mission is to increase diversity among artists and audience by engaging and illuminating the South Asian American experience.  They aim to broaden, strengthen and enrich the experience of the theatre going audience.  The performance will be followed by a discussion with the director and cast.
 

Hannah Unpacks Her Trunk

The Children’s Museum of Immigration presents an hour long, interactive show. This program geared toward children age 6 to 8 tells the immigration story as seen through the eyes of a Swedish immigrant in 1900.  Hannah Unpacks her Trunk introduces the basic concepts of Immigration - deciding to leave home, making a journey, establishing a new home and fitting in. 
 

Dreamlandia

Teatro Vista presents a staged reading of Octavio Solis’ play directed by Cecilie D. Keenan.  Dreams and reality collide for a family living on the U.S. and Mexico border as they deal with the clash of cultures and colors, NAFTA, narcotics and illegal immigration. Crisp, comic and insightful, this modern-day take on Calderon’s Life is a Dream is written in English with a sprinkling of Spanish.  Join us for a post-show discussion led by Luis Gutierrez, Executive Director of Latinos Progresando.  Topic TBA.
 
Our Enemies

Silk Road Theatre Project presents a staged reading of Yussef El Guindi’s play directed by Stuart Carden. Struggling writer Gamal, fueled by the limited Arab voices represented in the US media, engages in a prank campaign to shake up the system. But those in power have a way of turning the tables. Our Enemies is a provocative look at identity, media-representation, love and lust in the Arab-American community. Award-winning playwright El Guindi will attend the reading and post-show discussion.
 
Photo Exhibit By Steve Kagan
March 22 - April 15
Throughout thinkTank, an exhibit featuring the work of phtographer Steve Kagan will be on display in the Victory Gardens lobby.  Kagan's photographs of recent Chicago immigrants are featured in Jeff Libman's An Immigrant Class: Oral Histories from Chicago's Newest Immigrants.  This exhibit is free, open to the public, and does not require a reservation.  The exhibit is generously sposnored by The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
